For Audre
This tea set is inspired by activist and self-described "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," Audre Lorde. Lorde lived a very inspiring and impactful life as an educator and activist. She showed her strength in every facet of her life through her dedication to making the world a better place for the coming generations. Her passion for confronting homophobia, racism, classism, misogyny, and ableism was expressed beautifully through her elegant yet strong poetry.
Lorde spent a lot of her time as an activist trying to change society's view on what a woman should be, “delicate and small”. In order to depict Lorde breaking traditional gender roles, I made a tea set that looked like a traditional porcelain tea set with small, delicate flowers on it, and then made it look like it had been broken and burnt. This piece was featured in The Next Wave exhibition at The Vanderelli Room in Columbus, Ohio.
